Important Notice:

It has come to our attention that certain sources categorize defensive end Malik Herring as a restricted free agent. However, our understanding, as we delve into the offseason, is that he remains under contract for the 2024 season. This assertion is grounded in his placement on Kansas City’s Reserve/NFI (non-football injury) list during his rookie season. As we approach the commencement of the league year and navigate the offseason, we anticipate gaining further clarity on his specific status for the 2024 season.

New players (18)

Each of these players has inked Reserve/Future contracts for the upcoming 2024 season. This designation ensures their inclusion on the team’s 90-man roster as the new league year kicks off at 3 p.m. Arrowhead Time on Wednesday, March 13. It’s worth noting that players marked with an asterisk (*) were part of the team’s practice squad at the conclusion of the season.

Players from the 2023 practice squad who have not finalized contracts include T Darian Kinnard, TE Matt Bushman, TE Gerrit Prince, WR Cornell Powell, DT Mike Pennel, and C Austin Reiter.

Free agents (26)

At the conclusion of the season, each of these players found themselves on the team’s active roster or Reserve/Injured list. Despite their current status, their contracts are set to expire on the inaugural day of the new league year. These players are categorized into three distinct groups, each contingent on their tenure in the league.

Exclusive rights free agents (ERFAs)

Players with fewer than three accrued seasons in the league fall into this category. The Chiefs possess the ability to secure their rights for the 2024 season by offering a one-year NFL minimum contract. Typically, most Exclusive Rights Free Agent (ERFA) players are presented with and proceed to sign these contracts.

  • OL Mike Caliendo
  • LB Cole Christiansen
  • LB Jack Cochrane
  • S Nazeeh Johnson

Restricted free agents (RFAs)

Players with three accrued seasons in the league fall into this group. Although they retain the freedom to negotiate and sign with any team, the Chiefs have the option to extend a contract tender. This tender grants the team the right of first refusal and/or draft-pick compensation if the player chooses to sign with another team.

  • T Prince Tega Wanogho
  • TE Jody Fortson

Unrestricted free agents (UFAs)

Players with four or more accrued NFL seasons belong to this category. They are unrestricted free agents with the liberty to negotiate and sign with any team. While some may secure new contracts with the Chiefs, others will be granted the opportunity to explore more favorable deals with alternative teams. In line with historical patterns, a portion may eventually return to the Chiefs if they encounter difficulties finding opportunities elsewhere. Conversely, for some, the chapter of wearing a Kansas City uniform may draw to a permanent close.

  • G Nick Allegretti
  • T Donovan Smith
  • RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire
  • RB Jerick McKinnon
  • TE Blake Bell
  • WR Mecole Hardman
  • WR Richie James
  • QB Blaine Gabbert
  • DT Tershawn Wharton
  • DT Chris Jones
  • DT Derrick Nnadi
  • DE Michael Danna
  • LB Willie Gay Jr.
  • LB Darius Harris
  • LB Drue Tranquill
  • CB L’Jarius Sneed
  • S Deon Bush
  • S Mike Edwards
  • P Tommy Townsend
  • LS James Winchester

Draft picks (6)

Currently, Kansas City is poised to possess six picks in the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft scheduled to take place in Detroit from April 25 to April 27.

  • Round 1, Pick 32
  • Round 2, Pick 64
  • Round 3, Pick 95
  • Round 4
  • Round 5 (via Dallas)
  • Round 7

During the 2022 season, the Chiefs executed a trade, relinquishing a conditional seventh-round pick to the Houston Texans in exchange for cornerback Lonnie Johnson. As Johnson did not secure a spot on the Kansas City roster, it is anticipated that the Chiefs will regain possession of that pick.

Beyond these transactions, the team anticipates receiving compensatory picks for the losses incurred during the 2023 free agency period. While the exact number and placement of these picks remain uncertain, current estimates suggest the team will be awarded one pick at the conclusion of the fifth round.

Cap space ($15.5 million)

With a roster of 54 players currently under contract, our current offseason projection places the team’s salary cap space at $15.5 million. Until the commencement of the new league year on March 13, there are essentially no constraints on the team’s salaries. However, from that point onward until the kickoff of the 2024 season, the team must ensure that the top 51 salaries fit within the salary cap. Therefore, the $15.5 million represents an estimate of the available cap space as we enter the offseason today.

It’s important to note that this offseason estimation is subject to change in the near future. The Chiefs are expected to make roster adjustments before the official beginning of the league year.
